Books &… Utrecht

Less than 12 hours in Utrecht. This is the reason we’re in Amsterdam – to see Glen Hansard at The Tivoli Theatre. We arrive early and are immediately wowed by this gorgeous place; with canals, a market (where we sample some food), coffee shops, bars, restaurants, history – it really is more than worth a visit. Ireland are playing Italy in the Six Nations and we find ourselves once again in an Irish bar, just for a few… We squeeze ourselves onto a small table in the busy pub and watch Ireland win. The Dutch couple next to us don’t seem so happy, but we are mistaken… We end up drinking with them and whilst rushing to the Tivoli they take us to the very cool – Café Olivier.

As we arrive so late to The Tivoli Theatre, we end up standing at the back – in the country with some of the tallest people on earth and without my glasses the stage is sometimes hard to see. On the plus side (or is it?), we’re next to the bar. I’m not going to review the Glen Hansard gig because I really don’t know what to say. It’s not my first time seeing the musician, as I’ve followed him for many years as part of the Frames and cried when himself and Marketa Irglova won an Academy Award for Best Song in 2008. So I’m a fan, but I think even if I wasn’t this concert would have blown me away. It forms part of a larger tour and more information can be found here http://glenhansardmusic.com/ Just one other thing, he really does have a voice like no other…
